Sanction for Catalan municipality after CAS report

29-03-2023

A report filed by CAS International and AnimaNaturalis has resulted in a sanction for the municipality of l’Aldea (Catalonia, Spain). We filed a charge about the use of an animal that did not comply with the regulations on bull festivals (correbous) in the state. This is a serious violation of the law. At this moment the amount of the fine is unknown, but it is expected to be between 601 and 60,000 euros. It is also likely that the municipality will no longer be allowed to organize bull festivals for two years.

The Council for Games and Spectacles of the Generalitat de les Terres de l’Ebre (Tarragona) has initiated – following our report – a sanction procedure against the municipality of l’Aldea. Furthermore, the bull festival took place on August 18, 2022, with animals coming from the farm German Vidal. The reason for the charge is that the animal’s documentation was not in order. This means that the animal should never have participated in the correbous. The veterinarian present at the event confirmed the lack of the document.

This is a serious violation of the law: fraudulently altering animal data or involving an animal that does not meet the conditions for participation in traditional bull festivals is against the law. It is not yet known what for penalty the municipality of l’Aldea will face for violating the law.

In 2022, CAS and AnimaNaturalis filed five charges against organizers of various bull festivals in Spain. It is expected that some of these violations will be considered serious; there will be fines of up to 150,000 euros.

850,000 euros in subsidies

CAS and AnimaNaturalis are currently conducting an in-depth investigation into the 18,000 bull festivals that take place in Spain every year. With the information obtained, we conclude that Catalan municipalities put a total of 850,000 euros into cruel events involving bulls. 850,000 euros that are not used for things Catalan society currently needs, such as education or healthcare.

We will bring out more results from our research in the coming months. This is very important to be able to put an end to events with bulls. But we can only gather all this information with your help. We therefore ask you to help us with a donation so that we can complete our research. Become a sponsor or make a donation.
