Hunting dogs
In Spain, more than 50,000 galgos, podencos and other hunting dogs are dumped and/or killed every year. This happens at the end of the hunting season, which runs from October to February. That’s why February is known as the month of fear for the galgo.
Galgos are greyhounds used by hunters to hunt hares. The greyhound is the fastest breed of dog in the world, and therefore highly wanted for hunting and championships. The galgo hunting and championships mainly take place in Andalusia, Extremadura, Madrid, Castile-La Mancha and Castile and León, states where bullfighting also has a long cultural tradition.
