Colombian award for International Network Against Bullfighting
29-11-2022During the anti-bullfighting summit, the International Network Against Bullfighting received a prestigious Colombian award: Defenzoor del Año 2022 (animal defender of the year). The award ceremony is organised annually by our sister organisation Defenzoores, working particularly in Medellín. The Defenzoor del Año has been awarded for 17 years, including to the Spanish city of Barcelona. The award also previously went to Gustavo Petro, the former mayor of Bogotá and current president of Colombia.
Marius Kolff, former director of CAS, said:
“To now accept this beautiful award on behalf of the international anti-bullfighting network was for me one of the finest moments of my career. CAS has mostly been the main sponsor of this award. In 2019, I had the opportunity to co-present it myself in Medellín to the mayor and the director of Metropolitan Region of the Aburrá Valley in Colombia. That it was awarded indirectly to CAS was because, during all the years of the Network’s existence, we have been its most important trigger. A great honour fell to CAS and me; very nice on my ‘last’ summit.”
Colombian award
The International Network Against Bullfighting was awarded the Colombian prize Defenzoor del Año for its commitment to tackling bullfighting on a global level. Thanks to the network, many successes have been achieved in bullfighting countries. Important here is that organisations get to know each other through the network, and learn from each other’s experiences. They also work together for the end of bullfighting. Examples of successes are the end of children’s access to bullfighting in Ecuador and Portugal. Furthermore, interest in bullfighting has declined in all bullfighting countries.
