Mexican state Quintana Roo prohibits bullfighting
27-06-2019The government of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo has agreed to prohibit bullfighting. Quintana Roo is the fourth state in Mexico with a recent ban on bullfighting, after Sonora, Guerrero and Coahuila. Cockfighting is also prohibited.
A new animal welfare law was approved by the parliament. In addition to the prohibition of bullfighting and cockfighting, all municipalities in Quintana Roo must have an animal welfare department leaded by experts in this field. The initiative was set by Eugenia Solís Salazar (PAN), member of the state parliament of the state. Sonia López Cardiel (partyless) requested the addition of the prohibition of bullfights: 12 members of PRI and PVEM voted in favour of the initiative and eight from mainly PAN against it.
One of the arguments to support this initiative is to prevent younger generations of being confronted with violent activities with animals. The Committee for the Rights of Children of the United Nations requested Mexico to keep children away from the violence of bullfighting in 2015. Several states already have prohibited the entrance of minors to bullfights, like San Luis Potosi, Tijuana and Baja California.
Mexico is one of the most violent countries in the world and within society there is an increasing support for a ban on bloody spectacles with animals because they would stop a development towards a peaceful society. Animal suffering is also an important argument to prohibit this type of cruel events. 7 out of 10 Mexicans are in favour of a ban on bullfighting.
CAS International is very pleased with this news and hopes that more states will prohibit bullfighting, like Quintana Roo just did. CAS has been working with Mexican organizations for years to end bullfighting in Mexico. In November 2018 and March 2019, CAS traveled to Mexico for the international summit against bullfighting (organized by the International network against bullfighting), a national summit and for lobby activities.
