Protest in Mexico City against illegal bullfighting
12-07-2024On Thursday July 4, CAS International, AnimaNaturalis México and other organizations of the coalition México Sin Toreo (México without bullfighting) protested in Mexico City against bullfighting. They are illegal in Mexico. During three different governments, illegal bullfights have been allowed throughout the country without supervision and sanctions. With this protest, we demand enforcement of the law.
Food safety
Today, there is a ruling that orders the Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico (SADER) to comply with the law. However, the ministry continues to allow bullfighting and is not complying with the law. The ruling was made by the Fourth Collegiate Court of Mexico City after CAS International and AnimaNaturalis filed the case. It is irrevocable and requires the Mexican Food Safety Administration (SENASICA) to enforce. The meat from the animals killed is consumed.
SENASICA does not follow the federal Animal Health Law as well as Mexican regulations on killing methods of domesticated and wild animals. There are no exceptions to the slaughter of fighting bulls during a bullfight. This is why bullfighting has been illegal in Mexico for 17 years. SENASICA should impose sanctions when bullfights are held, but it does not.

Symbolic closure
The México Sin Toreo protest took place because the Ministry of Agriculture refused to receive a delegation from the coalition. It was held across from the office of the Ministry of Agriculture. With yellow ribbons, we symbolically closed the ministry’s office because it allows the illegal death of bulls during bullfights.

Impunity and corruption
Mexico is one of the most corrupt countries in Latin America. It also scores high in terms of impunity. In 2022, for example, Mexico became the world’s deadliest country for journalists. The perpetrators of murders are barely punished. The country has also been plagued by kidnappings and disappearances for years, usually without consequences for the perpetrators. Illegal bullfights are taking place in Mexico for 17 years and are part of the high level of impunity and corruption in the country.
México Sin Toreo
The México sin Toreo coalition was formed to stand up to the corruption and impunity in the country, protecting the elite of wealthy businessmen who perpetuate bullfighting. From this coalition, CAS International will continue to fight so that the law is enforced and no more bullfights take place in Mexico.
