CAS and AN film fire bull in Catalonia

CAS International and AnimaNaturalis have filmed a cruel fire festival with bulls in Catalonia (Spain). The event took place on July 24 in the municipality of Camarles (Tarragona). With the relaxation of coronation measures, bull festivals in Spain are taking place again. Therefore, we can once again take new images of these events and show them to the world. The fire bull of Camarles is an extremely cruel event, in which the bull’s horns are covered with a flammable substance and then set on fire. When the bull is released with “burning horns” it is chased. The animal panics because of the fire and cannot put it out in any way. The flammable material falls on his head so that he ends up being partially covered by it. The event takes place not only in Camarles but also elsewhere in Spain. In Catalonia and the state of Valencia, some 2,500 fire bull festivals are held each year.

More than 18,000 cruel bull festivals take place in Spain every year. CAS International and AnimaNaturalis are currently conducting the largest investigation ever into the abuses taking place in various bull festivals in Spain. Both organizations want to bring this animal suffering to light, not only in Spain but also abroad. The majority of Spaniards are against these types of events with bulls that are considered controversial.

Subsidies

These types of bull festivals receive municipal, regional and national subsidies. For example, thanks to our research we know that Catalonia puts 850,000 euros of subsidies into cruel bull festivals every year. The breeding of the bulls is partly financed by agricultural subsidies from the European Union. It is estimated that a total of 629 million euros of subsidy ends up in bullfighting and festivals with bulls in Spain.130 million comes from agricultural subsidies from the European Union.
