CAS International and AnimaNaturalis protested on June 16 against the bullfights that took place during the festivals of Hogueras in the Spanish city of Alicante. 100 activists took part in the protest, commemorating the victims of bullfighting.

The city of Alicante is located in the Spanish state of Comunidad Valencia, which has the highest diversity of cruel festivities with bulls. It is also one of the Spanish regions where bulls suffer the most. Yet fewer bullfights are being held in Spain. According to recent data from the Ministry of Culture and the bullfighting sector, analyzed by AVATMA, between 2007 and 2018, there was a 58.4% decrease in bull festivals in bullrings. Since 2017, these types of events have fallen by a further 2.1%. The number of bull runs and other types of festivities with bulls dropped also and this is happening for the first time in years. In Comunidad Valenciana there is a decrease of 1,100 festivities with bulls between 2018 and 2017.

80.96% of the bullfighters did not work with bulls in any event in 2018. And this also applies to 95.3% of the novilleros, bullfighters specialized in the mistreatment of young bulls. In addition, it is known that no bullfights were held in most bullfighting arenas in Spain and that between 66% and 77% of the breeders of fighting bulls did not sell any bulls for cruel events with animals.

Currently there are 3 states where bullfights are not being held: Catalonia, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. CAS International played an important role in the end of bullfighting in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands by lobbying and informing the public about the cruel bullfights together with Spanish organizations.

It is estimated that this year around 9,000 bulls will die in Spain at bull events. More than 50,000 bulls will be used at bull festivals for public entertainment. After the cruel festivities with animals, the bulls will be killed this year or next year.
