Protest in Zaragoza
On Sunday, October 6, CAS International and AnimaNaturalis organized a protest against bullfights held during the so-called Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza. Activists lay on the ground on a capote—an essential tool in bullfighting. The capote is a pink cape used by bullfighters to lure the bull toward them. The bull runs after the capote, with the aim of exhausting and weakening it, thereby reducing the chances of the bull injuring the bullfighter.
The activists were scantily dressed, lying on the capote to symbolically “step into the bull’s skin.” Behind them, other activists held banners to raise awareness.
Between October 4 and 13, 60 bulls were killed in Zaragoza. The Fiestas del Pilar are known for music, dancing, and traditions. However, this year they returned with a bitter surprise: an increase in bullfights and the reinstatement of bullfighting spectacles that had been banned in Zaragoza for eight years. This decision was made by the new city council. For this reason, it was especially important to stage a protest in Zaragoza this year. The action received significant media attention!

Protest in Logroño
On Sunday, September 23, CAS International and AnimaNaturalis organized a protest against bullfights held during the San Mateo festivities in Logroño. During the protest, activists held large boards depicting the heads of bulls and horses, symbolizing the victims of the bullfighting industry.
The San Mateo festivities in Logroño are a celebration of the grape harvest and have no connection to bullfighting. Nevertheless, the city council organizes bullfights every year. This year, bullfights took place between September 21 and 24, during which 24 bulls were killed.

Protest in Madrid
On Saturday, September 22, we protested in Spain’s capital, Madrid, against bullfighting at the Las Ventas bullring. The Spanish animal rights party PACMA organized the annual demonstration, which was attended by thousands of people.
Muchas gracias a las miles de personas que habéis venido a luchar contra la barbarie y la muerte que supone la tauromaquia. ¡La abolición está cada vez más cerca!

#NoEsMiCultura
Since the beginning of this year, Spanish organizations have been collecting signatures for the #NoEsMiCultura citizens’ initiative. By February 2025, 500,000 signatures must be gathered to revoke Law 18/2013, which declares bullfighting as part of Spain’s cultural heritage. Revoking this law would restore authority over cultural and entertainment matters to regional and local governments.
CAS International supports this citizens’ initiative. During the protests mentioned above, signatures were collected for the initiative.
