European subsidies to bullfighting continueWednesday, October 22nd 2014
The European Parliament lacked the courage to ban the subsidies to bullfighting. However, we did see a large amount of votes in favor of ending the subsidies, nearly half of the total number of votes: 323 votes were in favor for the end, 309 against, while there were 58 abstentions.

Next Wednesday, October 22, the European Parliament will discuss the 2015 budget. Subsidies to agriculture will be one of the topics. An important issue for us since this is one of the channels the bullfighting industry gets money from the EU. This happens through agricultural subsidies for the breeding of cattle for meat consumption.

The Spanish municipality of Manacor (Mallorca) has declared itself as anti-bullfighting municipality. Nine municipalities have declared themselves against bullfighting on the Spanish Island till now. This has been achieved thanks to our campaign ‘Mallorca Sense Sang’ (Mallorca without Blood).

The budget Committee of the European Parliament has voted on the amendment to stop the European subsidies to bullfighting, initiated by Bas Eickhout, Dutch member of the parliament for the green Dutch party Groen Links.
