The end of bullfighting in Mallorca is getting closer and closer. The political parties in the government of the Spanish state of the Balearic Islands (PSIB, Més per Mallorca and Podemos) reached an agreement. There is a bill for a new animal protection law that imposes conditions on how bullfights should be carried out. These conditions make it impossible to organize a bullfight.

The bill asks for a prohibition of the killing or injuring of the bull, as well as the use of horses during bullfights. Bullfighters will be tested for doping beforehand. Minors (until 18 years of age) will not be allowed to attend a bullfight. And the bulls need to come from cattle farms in the neighboorhood to avoid long transportation times.

This bill makes it impossible to carry out bloody bullfights. The political parties expect that the bill will be approved this summer. Unfortunately an exception has been made in this bill for the feast correbou de Fornalutx. The socialist party PSIB will only support the bill if this feast is not prohibited. Normally, the bull is brought tot he slaughterhouse after the feast, but in the bill it is stated that the bull will not be killed.

Mallorca Sense Sang
Thanks to the campaign ‘Mallorca Sense Sang’ (Mallorca without Blood), of CAS International and AnimaNaturalis, supported by HSI, 30 municipalities declared themselves against bullfighting. In total, 34 municipalities in Mallorca are against bullfighting. More than 360,000 signatures have been collected in the meanwhile. And the capital of the state, Palma de Mallorca, declared itself against bullfighting. The main goal of this campaign is to abolish bullfights and cruel feasts with bulls in the Balearic Islands. The campaign can count on widespread support in society.

After the elections for the states in May 2015, and the inauguration of the new government on de Balearic Islands, Mallorca Sense Sang organized meetings with the governing left-wing political parties. Since then a lot of work has been done to make a bill for a new animal protection law. Unfortunately not all political parties have kept their word slowing down the entire process.

In 2016, the Spanish Constitutional Court declared that the states are not allowed to prohibit bullfighting. It is a matter of the nation. This is a reaction on the prohibition of bullfighting in Catalonia of 2012. Because of this declaration a new bill was needed to regulate bullfights.

An absolute prohibition on bullfights will not be possible in the Balearic Islands, but they can be regulated in a way that it becomes impossible to carry them out. This bill makes it possible to end bullfights in the Balearic Islands.
