Donostia - San Sebastian
The council of the Basque city of Donostia - San Sebastian has announced that till 2016 bullfighting will be prohibited in its city. Until then specific conditions will be set to renting the bullring.
The council already has the intention to abolish bullfighting for a long time. In August 2012 the Mayor of the city, Juan Carlos Izagirre, indicated that "the suffering of an animal should not be a public spectacle". From an economic standpoint Izagirre stated that "a facility as Illumbe (the name of the bullring) cannot be maintained with public money in order to facilitate seven bullfights per year". From now on the bullring will be used for sport activities, theater, music and all kinds of events that do not comprise of the abuse of an animal.
CAS International is very pleased with the decision the local government of Donostia - San Sebastian has made. We hope that more Spanish councils will follow the example of this city to ban bullfighting. CAS International have been protesting, together with sister organizations, several times against bullfighting in Donostia - San Sebastian
